What are traumatic brain injuries?

On Behalf of Usera & Snow, P. C. | Jul 19, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Traumatic brain injuries happen when the head takes a significant amount of damage, usually causing the brain to hit the inside of the skull.

These injuries – known as TBIs – can have a severe impact on a victim’s overall health and wellness.

Changes in personality and pain

Medline Plus discusses the impact of trauma on the brain. Traumatic brain injuries can have lasting complicated consequences on victims.

For example, some may undergo a change in personality. This often happens with damage to the frontal lobe in particular, which controls impulse and anger. Victims with damage to this area may seem much more aggressive or even violent suddenly.

Others may experience lasting physical pain due to potential nerve damage. Some may experience a non-stop sensation of burning, numbness or tingling along their limbs. Others might suffer from chronic and severe headaches or migraines. Head injuries often include neck injuries too, which can result in pain, stiffness and a limited range of motion.

The impact of cognitive issues

Some of the related memory problems and cognitive issues can impact a victim’s ability to live an independent life, too. They may need to rely on aid to do things they once barely even thought about.

Victims can deal with the effects for months or even years after the initial event, too. This can have a serious impact on a victim’s mental state. After so long dealing with chronic pain or other unpleasant changes, victims may develop depression, anxiety, or stress and trauma disorders.

It is important for victims of brain injuries to get immediate treatment. This is the best way to avoid permanent damage that might affect a victim’s future and to ensure that he or she gets the best medical treatment for their particular injury.
