Follow these 3 tips for safer motorcycling in winter

On Behalf of | Jan 31, 2019 | Motorcycle Accidents

Riding your motorcycle in winter is a risk that you may be willing to take, but you must keep in mind that there are hazards that wouldn’t normally be present in the spring, summer or fall. One of those hazards is the likelihood of snowfall and ice. The other, potentially more dangerous, hazard is that drivers don’t expect to see motorcyclists in the winter.

If you plan to ride in the winter, there are several things you can do to help yourself stay safe. Here are three tips to help keep you warm and visible on your ride.

1. Use your lights

No matter when you’re riding, it’s a good choice to use your light (or lights). If conditions are a little gray, cloudy or getting dark, this could be the difference between a driver seeing you or not.

2. Wear multiple layers

Another thing to do is to wear multiple layers. There’s a potential for getting splashed with cold water and for getting cold from the wind against your body. Wear layers to prevent hypothermia and cold, which could distract you and make you more prone to getting into an accident.

3. Watch out for cracks, snow and black ice

Finally, look for cracks, snow and black ice. These are all real threats to motorcyclists and could lead to fatal crashes. If you’re not sure about the weather or the condition of the roads, it may be a better idea to use your passenger vehicle or public transportation.

These are some tips to help keep you safer this winter. Prepare for the cold, and you’ll be at an advantage on the roads.
