How can I protect myself from factors that could lead to a motorcycle accident?

On Behalf of | Jun 13, 2022 | Motorcycle Accidents

The biggest risk to you when riding your motorcycle is other vehicles, but you cannot control what they do. What you can do is keep yourself as safe as possible by knowing about some common factors that lead to accidents for bikers.

The Oregon Driver and Motor Vehicle Services explains there are a few things to keep in mind that can help you to increase your safety when on a motorcycle.

Distractions

Distractions often lead to accidents for anyone driving any type of motor vehicle. This hazard is one you can easily avoid by making sure you pay attention to driving and the road. Do not let anything take your focus off the task at hand. If you need to focus on something else, pull off and handle it and then resume driving. If you are having a bad day and cannot concentrate, consider not taking your bike out that day because it may be too easy to lose mental focus.

Weather

Weather is something you cannot control, but you can control how you react to it. Keep your bike off the road in hazardous weather. It just is too difficult to stay safe. Heavy rains and fog reduce visibility which is already a tricky situation for motorcycles. You will not be able to see and others will not be able to see you. Slippery conditions also pose a huge risk. It is too easy to lose control on a slippery roadway. You must be extra cautious about the vehicles around you on bad weather days, too.

Fatigue

Fatigue is another issue you need to watch out for. If you are too tired, you may not be able to fully focus on driving. Some people may struggle with not falling asleep while going down the road. You and any passenger need to be awake and alert at all times you are on the motorcycle. If you feel tired, take a nap before you hit the road.

You cannot control every risk out there when you ride a motorcycle, but these are a few things you do have the ability to control. Making sure you avoid common factors that lead to accidents will allow you to put your full focus on what others are doing around you so that you can better avoid a crash.
