Are motorcyclist injuries increasing in Oregon?

On Behalf of Usera & Snow, P. C. | Apr 9, 2021 | Motorcycle Accidents

Whether you regularly or occasionally ride your motorcycle, you need to understand the prevalence of accidents involving motorcyclists. Every year, many people suffer serious injuries while riding a motorcycle, from accidents caused by drunk drivers to poor road conditions and a host of other factors.

Sadly, many reckless drivers collide with motorcyclists. There are many reasons for this, including losing focus on the road while using their phones or driving drunk or drowsy.

How many motorcyclists suffer injuries in Oregon?

The Oregon Department of Transportation published information that sheds light on the prevalence of motorcyclist injuries and fatalities in the state. According to ODOT, there were more than 1,000 injury accidents involving motorcyclists during 2018. In 2017, 757 injury accidents involved motorcyclists.

Not only did 2018 see an increase in the number of motorcycle crashes resulting in injuries, but more motorcyclists lost their lives as well. During 2018, 85 motorcyclists lost their lives, compared to 56 during 2017.

How common is impairment among motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes?

While the number of motorcyclists involved in fatal accidents and injury crashes increased during 2018 in comparison to the previous year, fewer had impairment due to drug use or having a blood alcohol content level over .08. Out of motorcyclists involved in these crashes during 2018, 45% had impairment due to alcohol or drugs, compared to 55% in 2017.

Sadly, motorcyclist accidents continue to claim lives and cause devastating injuries in Oregon and across the country. If you are struggling with the consequences of a crash, stay focused on your recovery.
