Reducing product defects begins with quality control

On Behalf of Usera & Snow, P. C. | Feb 22, 2021 | Products Liability

When a defective product makes its way into a consumer’s hands, it can cause inconvenience for the manufacturer. However, depending on the product, its use and the type of defect, bad products could cause serious consequences for end-users that sometimes result in life-altering injuries or death.

Government entities such as the Consumer Product Safety Commission, oversee a number of products and enforce regulations designed to protect consumers from faulty products. Companies that fine-tune their quality control efforts can reduce their liability and help protect their consumers from unnecessary risks.

Understanding the term “defective”

A product defect can impact product use and prevent it from working effectively, efficiently and safely. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the legal definition of a defect is when a product flaw causes unreasonable danger to end-users.

The development of a quality control strategy looks different for every manufacturer but may include the following:

  • Hands-on training for line employees
  • Establishment of stringent work quality standards
  • Regular inspection and maintenance on all equipment
  • Adequate product testing

Analyzing product samples

Companies can learn a lot about the effectiveness of their products through analyzing samples. According to Boss Magazine, testing allows manufacturers to assess and verify the quality, process and function of their products prior to selling them to the public.

As soon as a manufacturer notices a defect, they should immediately address the source of the issue and implement a solution to prevent ongoing problems. Manufacturers who knowingly or negligently release defective products for consumer use may face serious legal repercussions, especially if their actions result in the injury or death of an end-user.
