80-year-old man dies in rear-end crash caused by fog

On Behalf of | Dec 20, 2018 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Car crashes have the potential to lead to serious injuries or fatalities. One of the major issues on the roads today is that some people do not pay attention to what is happening in front of them. As a result, they end up causing crashes that seriously impact those around them.

Take, for example, a crash that happened in Salem, Oregon. The Oregon State Police reported that there was a two-vehicle crash on Highway 22. A man had been rear-ended by a commercial vehicle with a 53-foot trailer while driving his 1975 Volkswagen Beetle.

The 80-year-old man driving the Beetle had been driving east when he was rear-ended by a 55-year-old commercial driver’s truck. As a result of the impact, the 80-year-old man’s vehicle went off the road and rolled over. This resulted in the man’s death; He was pronounced dead when emergency help arrived.

The police stated that a major contributing factor in this horrific crash was that there was heavy fog in the area. The police do plan to hold an investigation and to reconstruct the scene to determine if there will be charges placed against the commercial driver. There was no report on if the commercial vehicle’s driver was injured.

This crash may have been one with weather-related factors, but the reality is that all drivers have to drive safely for the conditions. It is not acceptable to tailgate or to be distracted and cause a rear-end collision. Doing so could cause a chain reaction that may lead to a driver’s serious injuries or a death like in this case.
