These types of distracted driving remain common

Every driver realizes the importance of paying attention to the road. Even so, there will always be people who think it’s okay to become distracted while behind the wheel. They believe nothing bad will ever happen to them.

Here are seven types of distracted driving that remain common:

  • Cellphone use: This includes everything from texting to checking email to making an outbound call.
  • Daydreaming: Rather than focusing on the road, your mind begins to wander and you become lost in thought.
  • Passengers: When driving with passengers, it’s important to let them know that you need to stay focused at all times. It’s okay to make small talk, but you don’t want to go beyond that.
  • Eating or drinking: You may think you can save time by eating or drinking while driving, but in all actuality, you’re taking a big risk with your safety.
  • Adjusting vehicle controls: From the climate to the radio, there are many vehicle controls that can distract you from the task at hand.
  • Smoking: When you smoke while driving, you may not be paying attention to what you’re doing. Also, there’s a good chance you only have one hand on the wheel.
  • Reaching for an object: Maybe you’re reaching for your cellphone. Or maybe you’re reaching for a toy your child dropped on the floor. Regardless of the type of object, this can lead you to take your eyes off the road and at least one hand off the wheel.

You can avoid these types of distractions to enhance your safety, but you can’t do anything to make other drivers pay attention to the road.

If a distracted driver strikes your vehicle and causes you to suffer injuries, move to safety, call 911 and receive medical treatment. After your injuries have been treated, you can begin to look into seeking compensation for your damages.
